Reaching Those Who Need Help One Child, One Family At A Time
They come to us every day, holding the hand of a social worker. Some are runaways escorted by the security of a policeman. Their eyes tell their stories. But once at the shelters, the children and teens know they're safe. From the abuse, neglect, abandonment, and parental rejection. Some have come before; some will come again. They stay until it's safe to go back home of out-of-home care can be found. Our shelters are a place for children to heal -- physically and emotionally. Children may remain in care for a few hours, or for several weeks, or for a few months.
The Children's Home, which has been at its current location since 1976, is a 26 bed facility licensed to serve children ages 2 through 17. The Children's Home accepts primarialy court ordered placements through Child Protective
Services (CPS), Admission to the shelter is generally the result of abuse, neglect, and abandonment sustained in the home. While at the Children's Home, an assessment is often conducted. The assessment includes psychological, physical, and educational evaluations of the youth. This allows the Shelter and Caseworker to assign an accurate level of care to the youth.

The intent of the Children's Home is to be able to place the youth in the most appropriate placement as soon as possible and keep them from bouncing around the Foster Care System. Juvenile Probation also places a number of youth at the Children's Home as they transition from placement back into the home setting. The Children's Home is committed to providing youths a safe, supportive environment in which they can make constructive decisions about their future and their relationships with others.
